چکیده

Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) is a highly contagious disease of swine caused by the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), an Alphacoronavirus of the Coronaviridae family.1 Swine enteric coronavirus diseases (SECDs) have been known for decades, but PEDV was reported for the first time in Canada in January 2014, nine months after it was first discovered in the United States in May 2013. Even though genetic and phylogenetic analyses of three US PEDV strains suggest that they likely originated from China,2 the exact pathway for introduction has yet to be identified. A root cause investigation conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (USDAAPHIS) suggested that the use of flexible intermediate bulk containers, contaminated in the country of origin and reused in the United States for the transport of bulk feed or feed ingredients, could have been the source of introduction of SECD viruses into the United States, as well as contributing to their widespread introduction onto individual farms all over the country.3

Impact of a porcine epidemic diarrhea outbreak on swine productivity in Japan: a retrospective cohort study

The objective was to investigate porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) outbreak that occurred in 2014 in Japan and its effects on herd-level productivity using a data recording system (PigINFO). The study herds were selected from farrow-to-finish herds (n=99) that entered in the PigINFO system between July 2013 and March 2015. From 1 April to 30 June 2014 (PED epidemic), any herds with clinical signs...

New Variants of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus, China, 2011

In 2011, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) infection rates rose substantially in vaccinated swine herds. To determine the distribution profile of PEDV outbreak strains, we sequenced the full-length spike gene from samples from 9 farms where animals exhibited severe diarrhea and mortality rates were high. Three new PEDV variants were identified.

An evaluation of contaminated complete feed as a vehicle for porcine epidemic diarrhea virus infection of naïve pigs following consumption via natural feeding behavior: proof of concept

BACKGROUND Since its initial detection in May 2013, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) has spread rapidly throughout the US swine industry. Initially, contaminated feed was proposed as a risk factor for PEDV; however, data were not available to support this theory. Here we provide proof of concept of this risk by describing a novel means for recovering PEDV-contaminated complete feed materi...

Emergence of porcine epidemic diarrhoea in North America

overview Porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (PEDv) was first recognized in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in 1971. Since then, PEDv has become endemic in many European and Asian countries, where PEDv infection typically results in minor outbreak incidents with relatively low mortality (Pan et al., 2012; Li et al., 2012b). In 2010, despite vaccination programmes, a virule...
